Arrangement of the collection

The collection has been divided into two parts: photographs, and printed or manuscript documents. Files of photographs and documents were catalogued in alphabetical order of subject beginning with the Marques series and continuing in the series sequence shown below.

Contents are broadly divided into seven series, maintained by Nick Baldwin, comprising

  • Marques: contains photographs, product information and correspondence relating to individual car, truck and bus manufacturer marques and coachbuilders
  • Glass plate negatives: contains negatives from the 1920s and 1930s depicting a wide variety of motorised road vehicles and including motorcycle racing, gas and steam powered vehicles, and street scenes during the General Strike
  • Places: contains photographs, publications, newspaper cuttings and other printed items relating primarily to public transport, the motor industry and driving in various British towns and in various countries around the World
  • Operators: contains photographs, publications, newspaper cuttings and other printed items relating to British commercial vehicle operators
  • Subjects: contains photographs, publications, newspaper cuttings and other printed items relating to a wide variety of subjects such as coachbuilding, vehicle ownership, the environment, and road safety
  • Components: contains photographs, publications, newspaper cuttings and other printed items relating to motor vehicle component manufacturers
  • Personal papers: contains correspondence, research notes and photographs of Nick Baldwin, John Baldwin, Michael Sedgwick, and Ernest Siddeley

The collection also contains road transport journals and classic car auction catalogues.
