Reasons for change

Ford Cortinas (Reproduced with kind permission of Ford Motor Company Limited)Vehicle design has changed for many reasons. They are usually technical changes such as the invention of computers or the development of existing materials like plastic or glass. Look at the 'Milestones' section of this Website to learn about more technical changes.

Mini at the shops (Copyright BMIHT)Sometimes changes are a result of what happens in society. Fifty years ago for instance, there were no out-of-town supermarkets and most people walked into their local town or village centre to buy groceries. Today's cars have lots of versatile luggage space for carrying groceries from supermarkets.

Look at the 'Timelines' section of this website and choose one type of vehicle that interests you. Have you a reason for choosing that particular type of transport, maybe you have family connections with it?

Use the timeline for your vehicle as a basis for your own timeline that will begin at 1945 and continue to today. Add other vehicles to the timeline from the 'Gallery' on this Website. You might like to work in decades, 1940-1949, 1950-1959, etc.

Now do some research to find out what significant events happened in Britain during those decades and add them to the timeline. You could use the Web or history books for information.

Look for trends such as engineering or social changes that took place in particular periods. For instance, the last 20 years has seen a growing awareness in the importance of caring for the environment which has led to vehicles that create less pollution.
